What shows before “Show more”
Description health
How this tool works: Everything runs in your browser with plain JavaScript — nothing is uploaded and there is no rating. The previews use the character thresholds YouTube uses for the "Show more" fold: about 157 characters on desktop and 100 on mobile.
Why the first 157 characters matter
A YouTube description can hold up to 5,000 characters, but only the first 157 or so show on desktop before the "Show more" link — and only about 100 on mobile. That opening is also what Google and YouTube pull into search snippets and what can surface in notifications and the share preview. If your first sentence is a link dump or a generic greeting, the most valuable real estate in your description is wasted.
Treat the opening like a meta description: lead with what the video delivers, in plain language, using the words a viewer would actually search for. The previews above show you that opening exactly as a viewer sees it, so you can write to the fold instead of guessing.
Timestamp best practices
Timestamps in the format 0:00 or 00:00 turn your description into a chapter list. They help viewers jump to the part they want, which can improve watch satisfaction, and they can appear as Key Moments in Google search results. Start your first timestamp at 0:00 and label each chapter clearly. The health check above flags whether any timestamps were detected.
Where to put your links
Links are useful, but not above the fold. A raw URL in the first 157 characters pushes your actual copy out of the visible area and out of the search snippet. Keep the opening as readable copy and move affiliate links, social links, and gear lists below the fold where they don't compete with your hook.
What YouTube reads in your description
YouTube uses the description as context for understanding and ranking the video, so the words you choose matter — especially early. That doesn't mean stuffing keywords; it means making sure your real topic actually appears in the opening and that the description is structured into scannable sections rather than one long paragraph. Once your description is tight, run your title through the companion YouTube Title Analyzer so your title and description work together. To complete your video packaging, preview your thumbnail at YouTube's real sizes with the YouTube Thumbnail Preview tool. For deeper, ongoing description and keyword help, our vidIQ review and TubeBuddy review cover how those tools approach optimization.

FAQ
Is this tool really free?
Yes. There is no signup, no email gate, and no paid tier. It works the moment the page loads.
Does it edit my description?
Only the "Clean up formatting" button changes the text — it collapses extra blank lines and trims trailing spaces. It never changes your words, links, or timestamps.
What is YouTube's description limit?
5,000 characters. But only about 157 on desktop and 100 on mobile show before "Show more", so the opening matters most.
